MOUSEcky's "media log"

I don't want to write full-on reviews; I never have enough to say. I still want to speak about the things I like. I thought this page would be a nice compromise.

Some entries have ratings; some do not. It's up to my own discretion... I also rate very, very liberally. It's rare I dislike anything.

Sheoldred - EP 1

released 2026.01.16 / written 2026.02.15

Sheoldred is a new project that I know nothing about, other than the fact that they're a Magic the Gathering themed band. This would usually turn me away as I dislike trading card games, but I really enjoy Dex's solo project that same street, so I decided to give it a chance considering he markets this one as screamo too.

I don't know if my knowledge of emo and such is just extremely lacking, but this leans way more metal to me!! That being said, I don't subscribe to genres, so I guess Dex can do whatever he wants. 1c2qu's vocals are really good.

My pick: True-Name Nemesis

Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person

released 2023.10.13 / written 2026.02.15

I watched this with my girlfriend. I liked this movie, but we were both too drunk and distracted I think, so I can't give any further input... LOL.

I dig vampires. And suicidal tendencies. And fun love stories.

Tokyo Gore Police

released 2008.10.04 / written 2026.02.14

Tokyo Gore Police was one of my favourite movies before and after I dropped out of high school. I would watch it over and over and over again, as one of the few things I had downloaded. It's pure tokusatsu battle madness and, as the title suggests, full of gorey scenes with unrealistic blood spraying everywhere. Last night, I rewatched it for the first time in at least a year with my girlfriend.

The police force has been privatised. Violence and self-mutilation is noq rampant, the city is full of perverts and freaks, and there are Engineers—modified humans whose wounds become grotesque weapons—going on manic killing sprees. The job of the police force is to kill criminals as they see fit, especially these Engineers. Best of all, they wear some super imposing samurai-style uniforms.

You can't take a movie with unserious practical effects and out-there battle entirely seriously, but the narrative is still great, not to mention the costumes and set dressing. The protagonist Ruka, an Engineer hunter slowly who becomes disillusioned with the police force, is a badass... and the designs of the Engineers are overwhelmingly COOL.

A lot of the fights are campy and ridiculous. You can laugh about them all you want because they're unrealistic and thrilling. But outside of the action, there's some particularly gorey scenes that are slow and disgusting, which come off more like rape than battles... which I feel is very on purpose.

It's a great movie that leaves me sickened and entertained at the same time. Also, listen to HAHALEMON. Their music is featured in this film and they're ridiculously fun.

Phnonpenh Model - PATCHWORKS

released 1998.04.01 / written 2026.02.10

This morning I relistened to a classic while on the train: PATCHWORKS. It's a confounding album: one moment it is some regular old DnB, the next you wonder what you are even listening to. There is no better way to listen to such an album than while on public transport or driving.

My favourite track on the album is actually track 14, Dorobou no Uta, which translates to "The Thief's Song". It's one of the more confusing tracks: you are being serenaded complete with a lovely acoustic guitar, just for the sound of a drill to cut through periodically. It truly conveys the experience and feeling of living near a construction site. I thoroughly enjoy it all.

My Girlfriend is a Gumiho!

aired 2010 / written 2026.02.04

I've been needing a trashy drama to watch and this one looked like fun. However, I don't know where to torrent asian dramas, and the subtitles are really shocking me: like, they suck. Rakuten Viki have a pretty lacklustre subtitle team; compare their release of Hana-Kimi to the wildly more popular fansubs and report back to me!

I still enjoy the show so far despite that. I guess I'll update this when I've gotten through all 16 hours of it.

MUCC - Homura uta (3rd press)

released 2004.08.17 / written 2026.02.04

I listened to MUCC, once upon a time. I remember I liked them a lot. Then I locked away all memory of them forever, even more than most of the Visual Kei bands I listened to and then dropped in the past only to fall back in love with them. Finally, I do my part and listen to an album again.

I really liked this one. It's terribly grungy and moody and Visual Kei and has a lot of what I crave, including a lot of what I love from bands such as Dagashi Kashi and deadman while remaining appropriately poppy when required. Well done!
